More Growth. More Opportunities.

"It's our vision to be the leader in dentistry. With our ongoing growth, we continue to work toward that goal each day. Ontario Teachers' support and guidance over the past five years has helped the company lead the way in dentistry. With KKR's proven experience and resources, this only adds another layer of benefit to what we seek to accomplish." – Patrick Bauer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Heartland Dental

Growth has always been at the forefront of Heartland Dental's goals. Since our company's inception with a handful of supported dental offices in Illinois, we have continued to build upon our nationwide footprint. Now supporting offices in 35 states, most recently adding Washington, more and more dentists and team members are finding more of what they want. They become part of a network of over 12,000 dental professionals who share ideas, encouragement and camaraderie, and who all work for the same cause.

Looking toward the future, we have even more ambitious growth goals set. In the upcoming years, Heartland Dental strives to support over 5,000 dentists. There have been several recent happenings in our company that will help us along the way.

The Right Investment

Recently, Heartland Dental took a major step in pushing its growth forward by entering into a definitive deal with global investment giant, KKR. With this deal, KKR acquired a majority interest in the company from Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan and other existing shareholders. Under the terms, Ontario Teachers' retains sizeable ownership and will continue as a significant partner to the company. Heartland Dental's Founder and Executive Chairman Dr. Rick Workman, President and CEO Patrick Bauer, as well as supported dentists and team members will also remain significant shareholders.

"We are excited to finalize this deal and move forward with both KKR and Ontario Teachers' support. This opens up a multitude of opportunities for our company," said Bauer. "It's our vision to be the leader in dentistry. With our ongoing growth, we continue to work toward that goal each day. Ontario Teachers' support and guidance over the past five years has helped the company lead the way in dentistry. With KKR's proven experience and resources, this only adds another layer of benefit to what we seek to accomplish."

This new partnership sets that stage for us to advance our growth plans, implement the necessary goals and ultimately create more value with increased support, educational opportunities, cutting edge technology and more. Our number one priority (and reason for existence) is giving dentists more – more value, more support, more opportunities and more resources, so they can deliver the best patient care possible and effectively lead their teams. With KKR's expertise, we'll be able to continually build and develop even more opportunities.

As of 2017, KKR has completed transactions with approximately $555 billion of total enterprise value in 20 industries, including large companies such as HCA, PetVet, WebMD, Envision Healthcare Corporations, The Nielsen Company, Del Monte, the UFC and many others.

"With this agreement, Heartland Dental will still remain doctor-led and focused on our mission of supporting dentists as they best serve their communities. Our leadership team will remain fully intact." added Dr. Workman. "KKR and Ontario Teachers firmly believe, as do we, that Heartland Dental is prepared and capable of accelerating our growth rate. They are fully aligned with our culture and values."

"We have worked very hard to get to this point. It is a source of great pride to be in the position of considering ways that we may want to expand our non-clinical support operations, because it is the foundation for how we create value for dentists and teams." – Rick Workman, DMD, Founder and Executive Chairman of Heartland Dental

Ever-expanding Support

With so much growth on the horizon in regards to adding supported dentists, it is critical that we have the scalable means to support them. If we want to provide dental professionals opportunities for more work/life balance, education, world-class services, etc., we must expand our current level of support services. To achieve this, Heartland Dental plans to open additional support offices in the future. Markets throughout the U.S. are being considered for the locations of the new facilities, which—like the Effingham Support Office—will house non-clinical support positions such as human resources, marketing, accounting, insurance/receivables, information technology and more.

"Our support-office operations is the backbone for delivering top-notch service to dentists and their teams," said Bauer. "Given our size today and where we want to be tomorrow, we are always focused on advancing our support. Within a span of 20 years, Heartland Dental grew to more than 850 supported dental offices and 11,000 employees in 35 states—all with non-clinical support centralized from Effingham. Now we have the great privilege of analyzing the potential of expanding the geography of our support-office functions, and we couldn't be more excited."

Heartland Dental currently has 570 support office employees, 520 of which work in Effingham. Our strategic plan calls for the addition of supported dentists and dental offices, making the new regionalized model for core functions like accounting and information technology (IT) for example, most suitable. No decisions have been made about the types of positions or locations of additional supported offices that will be created and when. And although a timetable isn't set, Heartland Dental has partnered with global real estate expert Cushman & Wakefield to conduct a formal location search.

This expansion initiative will give Heartland Dental the opportunity to identify top professional talent in these additional locations to build upon our already stellar roster of support professionals. It is a win-win for everyone involved – Heartland Dental gets to create more employment opportunities and supported dentists/teams receive even more world-class, non-clinical assistance.

"We have worked very hard to get to this point," said Dr. Workman. "It is a source of great pride to be in the position of considering ways that we may want to expand our non-clinical support operations, because it is the foundation for how we create value for dentists and teams. Although we are open to considering all options, Effingham, Illinois is where it all started, and it will continue to be the 'heart' of Heartland Dental."
