Dan Williams, DDS, practicing dentist at Dental Care of Hampton in Hampton, Virginia
No matter what occupation you’re in, it’s easy to let the grind of day-to-day life get the best of you. Committing yourself to your work can be extremely rewarding, but it can also create stress, frustration and an overwhelming sense of burning out. This is especially true for dentists, who must often wear a dozen hats as both a clinician and business owner/manager. And that’s only taking professional challenges into account. Outside of work, life is constantly throwing many other unexpected challenges our way. We all need a way to maintain our focus and passion in the face of these challenges. We need that spark.
A few years back, Dr. Dan Williams of Dental Care of Hampton in Hampton, Virginia found himself in a similar situation. Dentistry had become a chore rather than an exciting career. More importantly, he found himself battling health issues. But in the midst of these challenges, he found an opportunity to regain his spark.
“I was going through a tough time. I was dealing with major health issues, and balancing medical treatment and surgery with running a practice was beating me down. Quite simply, I was ready to quit dentistry. Just around that time, about five years ago, I first learned about Heartland Dental from their affiliation representative, Roger Childerson,” said Dr. Williams. “Being in my 50’s and having grown Dental Care of Hampton into a large, successful practice, I didn’t have a lot of transition options. Plus with the challenges I was facing, I was definitely looking for means of professional support. After learning more, I decided it was the right move.”
Dr. Williams became a Heartland Dental supported dentist in November 2012. Still dealing with his medical problems at the time, Dr. Williams initially planned to only be affiliated with Heartland Dental for two or three years. However, after affiliating and incorporating Heartland Dental’s systems and support, his initial outlook on that timeline began to change.
“Right off the bat, I noticed things began to improve – not only in my office, but in my life in general. I’m convinced my faith, my change in attitude and embracing Heartland Dental’s support has all helped me thrive like never before,” said Dr. Williams. “In five years, my office growth has doubled, new patient numbers have skyrocketed with less advertising expenses and I’m doing more efficient dentistry confidently with less stress. I’m very protective of my team, so when I affiliated, it was important that they were all taken care of. I’m happy to say they’re all thriving as well.”
Dental Care of Hampton continues to thrive, as Dr. Williams has found the right opportunity to rejuvenate his passion for dentistry and gain the personal/professional balance he needed.
“I feel great, my office is doing great, my team is happy, and I’m just having fun! There is a positive energy going through Heartland Dental that is taking the company and my practice to new heights. From our leadership’s encouragement to the mountains of expert advice from colleagues, this environment has kept me going and contributed to my personal/professional success. I only planned to be a Heartland Dental supported dentist for a few years, but now plan to stay as long as I can,” added Dr. Williams. “All Heartland Dental supported dentists have a vested interest in the company. If Heartland Dental succeeds, we all succeed. That gives me even more reason to advance myself. To all dentists out there, both young and old, you really do have access to the best education and resources in the country with Heartland Dental. I’m still learning, getting better and having fun.”
