Coming Home

In her eight years as a dentist, Dr. Carissa Greinel-Blum has been supported by Heartland Dental on two different occasions. The first time was by happenstance, but the second time felt like coming home.

After graduating from Creighton University in 2008, Dr. Greinel-Blum moved to Maryland where she joined a group dental practice called Neibauer Dental Care. In 2011, the group of 27 offices affiliated with Heartland Dental.

“This is what I really want and this is what I’ve always wanted. It was so refreshing to know that I was going back to Heartland Dental.”

Dr. Greinel-Blum was very enthusiastic about the opportunity to become supported by Heartland Dental and she, along with her colleagues, traveled to meet with members of Heartland Dental at the Neibauer Dental Care headquarters in Virginia. They learned about how the company could support the personal and professional growth of themselves and their teams.

“From the beginning, one of the things that appealed to me the most was the quality of continuing education. It was not only convenient, but it was also better than the classes I could sign up for or investigate on my own,” she said. “The programs they put together for all levels, doctors and team members, is well thought out, well planned and well executed. Heartland Dental really strives to make sure everybody learns and grows.”

The continuing education extends outside of class too. Dr. Greinel-Blum appreciates that the courses provide her with the resources necessary to bring the information to her team in a way that’s positive and constructive for them and their patients. During her (first) time being supported by Heartland Dental, she also had the opportunity to serve as a mentoring doctor. She considers this opportunity a joy and a challenge, but overall an honor.

“There were lots of positive things about being a mentor that helped me grow as an individual. You do reach a point where you’re taught a lot, but if you don’t start teaching others, you lose out on how much you can teach yourself.”

Shortly after, Dr. Greinel-Blum chose to leave Neibauer Dental Care. Due to family reasons, she needed to move closer to home, which brought her to New Mexico.

“I was very sad to leave, but due to family matters I needed to move quickly. There wasn’t enough time to figure out a plan with Heartland Dental, and I had to do what was best for my family.”

She purchased an existing private practice in Alburquerque, NM, where she currently practices. Given that she had the luxury of learning so much between Neibauer Dental Care and Heartland Dental, Dr. Greinel-Blum felt she had a “leg up” on purchasing her own practice that most dentists don’t experience.

In her private practice, she was working 40 clinical hours per week and an additional 15-20 admin hours. She struggled with finding business support, keeping overhead low and motivating her team. For two and a half years, she ran the private practice on her own. But at the beginning of March 2016, she had the opportunity to affiliate with Heartland Dental once again.

“I had kept in contact with some people from Heartland Dental, and I called them immediately and said, ‘This is what I really want and this is what I’ve always wanted.’ It was so refreshing to know that I was going back to practicing in a Heartland Dental supported office.”

By April 2016, Bear Canyon Family Dentistry was a Heartland Dental supported office. Besides her team and career flourishing, she’s flourishing personally as well. Now, team members and patients tell Dr. Greinel-Blum that she has a sense of inner peace.

“I feel like I’m coming home to family.”
