20 Years in the Making

Patrick Bauer
President and Chief Executive Officer at Heartland Dental

This year is special for Heartland Dental. Twenty years ago, our company was founded. It all started with Dr. Rick Workman, who opened his first dental office in 1980 in Effingham, Illinois. By 1997, his first practice had grown into a group practice with over 25 locations in Illinois. After selling 21 of those locations on July 1st, 1997, the remaining four offices became the beginning of today's largest Dental Support Organization, Heartland Dental (you can learn more about these early beginnings in this issue). We have certainly come a long way since then with over 775 supported dental offices in 34 states.

This year is also special for myself, as it’s my 20th anniversary with Heartland Dental as well. I first joined Heartland Dental as Chief Operations Officer in 1997. In the beginning, it was a much smaller company compared to today, so I had the opportunity to be involved in many different aspects – marketing, recruiting and many others. It’s been an amazing experience seeing how much our company has evolved throughout the years. Now as Chief Executive Officer, I’m excited to see where we can go from here. Looking back at the past 20 years and looking forward to the next 20, we’ve taken a deeper look at what values truly embody Heartland Dental. These are elements that have always played a part in everything we do, and elements that will be key to our future growth:

Achievement – Striving for mastery through constant and never-ending improvement, focusing on results and putting the success of supported offices first.

Honor – Acting with honesty, integrity and transparency, maintaining a healthy work environment and doing the right things for the right reasons.

Execution – Staying open, positive and mentally flexible, delivering world-class processes and systems, efficiently managing change.

Balance – Promoting work/life balance, creating safe and supportive environments, giving back to the communities we serve.

Celebration – Staying grateful, having fun together, celebrating each other’s success and growth.

Collaboration – Working hard, smart and together, promoting inclusion and diversity.

These values perfectly sum up Heartland Dental, because these are the things that help us best support dentists and dental professionals. No matter if you’re an experienced professional or new to this industry, you want an ideal career, work/life balance, flexibility, education, and so on. By focusing on these values, we can help you achieve all of those things. We can get you to where you want to be.

That’s how Heartland Dental has succeeded through the past 20 years. That’s how I have succeeded through the past 20 years. That’s how we will continue to build our culture in the next 20 years. And it’s all about doing what’s best for supported dentists and team members.
